concord. already cooler than yesterday at this time. 60 in oakland. 56 degrees in san francisco. and 61 in san jose. this afternoon, the triple digits are long gone today 10 to 20 degrees cooler 80s inland and 68 degrees in san francisco. we'll check the weekend forecast in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. our big traffic news this morning is that bart service is set to resume by this afternoon. so the negotiations are continuing but at this point the strike is over. so -- not for this morning though. later on this afternoon. that's when service is set to resume. so for this morning, you can use muni, caltrain, they are operating on a regular weekday schedule. and ac transit continues to step up their transbay bus service. they have been a huge help during this bart strike, between the east bay and san francisco. coming up, we'll check the bay bridge. back to you guys. let's get deeper into our breaking news this morning. the end of the bart strike as elizabeth mentioned trains set to start running at 3 p.m.

bart and two unions agreed to extend their old contract for 30 more days. they now have until august 4 to reach an agreement. contract talks resume monday. the agreement was reached last night. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran has details from san francisco. cate. >> reporter: this is going to be great news for people who are working today because it means they will have bart to take home this afternoon. it also means the trains behind me will be up and running. we know that negotiations wrapped up around 11:00 last night. they decided to extend the old contract for 30 days as you mentioned while the two sides work on a new one. it was a proposal from the california labor secretary. but keep in mind, the unions say the battle is far from over. they say that bart needs to understand this is a 30-day deadline to get it right.

>> bart bullied us, their riding public and they have mercenaries in here trying to bust up the union. there's not acceptable. >> reporter: there's nothing to say they can't come to the end of the 30-day period and call for another strike. we are talking about the unions. but these 30 days will give both sides the chance to talk and also alleviate some of that pressure and just to let you know we still do not know the details about the negotiations. there is a reminder that there is a gag order in place on both sides but at least again as we say, these 30 days will give both sides to really hash out the details and also keep commuters happy. live in millbrae, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> bart and the two unions are apparently still quite far apart on those issues. one union worker says this is the worst he has seen two of the major points of contention include pay and safety. stay with kpix 5 for continuing coverage of the strike which is again going to end at 3:00 this afternoon. in the meantime, find our strike survival guide with

commute alternatives on kpix.com. new this morning, a huge grass fire lights up an east bay neighborhood. fire crews say fireworks may have started this fire near a pittsburg warehouse. it destroyed 50 acres. homeowners tried to put out the fire with their own water hoses trying to protect their own homes. >> it's frustrating because you actually never get a chance to have a true holiday. you're actually spending a lot of time just trying to be pro- active for homeowners and make sure they're not losing their most important assess. >> it took firefighters about two hours to contain that fire. egypt has closed a border crossing to the gaza strip after suspected islamist militants attacked two military checkpoints. that comes as protests continue in egypt. supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi call it rejection friday protesting the military coup. opponents say the overthrow say it was not a coup. >> it was a popular impeachment

of the president. it didn't start by the actions of the army. it was the people. >> president obama also reluctant to call the change a coup. that is because it is against united states law to give foreign aid to countries where the military overthrows an elected government. >> whatever it's called, egypt is a mess this morning. kpix 5's don knapp on the bay area exchange students to were evacuated from egypt. >> reporter: parents spent the final hours of a long day waiting for the safe arrival of their kids. >> we have been hearing that the situation has been degrading. reporter: but their 20-year- old daughter says she wasn't worried. >> uc was worried about us and shot us out of there fast. but i didn't -- i felt pretty safe. i have -- like i loved the people we were with. >> reporter: 10 students were evacuated from an island in the nile. lisa told her son by facebook that he was going to be evacuated.

>> he said seriously lame. i'm going to check my email, too, i guess, and talk to my teacher. >> reporter: he didn't know about the evacuation? >> no. >> reporter: now back in the u.s. alex understands the risk. >> we were pretty close to it so i can understand their concern. but the place where we were was safe at the time. but, you know, it wouldn't have taken long if things were to happen. >> reporter: watching the egyptian events on television worried parents more than the students. >> just knowing the volatility, the situation could explode into you just never know. >> reporter: another student who loves egypt says she brought home a lesson about freedom. >> a really long 4th of july for me so i mainly -- it makes me think you really can't take your independence for granted. we really take america for granted. egypt is constantly -- is the military going to be taking over? is this going to last? is it going to represent me? >> reporter: the students are out safe and sound but say

their summer adventure in egypt ended way too soon. at san francisco international airport, don knapp, kpix 5. crews on the front lines of a wildfire in arizona are starting to gain the upper hand. officials say the yarnell fire is now 80% contained. the residents of the town of peeples valley returned home thursday but the residents of yarnell are evacuated. as you know, the fire claimed the lives of 19 firefighters battling the blaze and destroyed more than 100 homes and elderly woman grateful after a san francisco officer saved her from an apartment fire. the officer was responding to a different call in japantown when somebody flagged him down. firefighters say he went into the burning building and rescued the women but suffered heat exhaustion in the process. both will be okay. some of the biggest fireworks shows we saw last night were these illegal kind and they packed a punch. kpix 5 crew hit the streets of an area called deep east oakland where the fireworks display rivalled ones put on by

professionals. people took to the streets igniting fireworks that went hundreds of feet into the air. some of the most popular ones are called coliseum fireworks because of their size. despite the fact that all fireworks are illegal in oakland, people say they they break the law for the kids. >> i think it all depends what kind of fireworks you're popping. if you are going to get explosives, like the m-1000, a little fireworks show for the kids it will be fine. >> from what we saw kids were kept on the sidewalks away from the fireworks. 15 bay area cities including san bruno, petaluma, union city, do allow safe and sane fireworks because they stay on the ground. on holidays like the 4th, fireworks and celebratory gunfire are common. both are loud, raucous explosions. so how do you tell the difference between the two? well, several bay area police departments have enlisted the help of a newark-based service called shotspotter that detects

gun related incidents in realtime. it can even determine if there are shell casings or other forensic evidence at the scene. >> it's the next generation 911 call that has a lot of content associated with it reliable, fast and precise. we're calling 100% of the time effectively very quickly within 30 to 45 seconds with a high degree of precision. >> the company says nearly 20% of all gunfire in the bay area happens on the 4th of july and 75 gunshots fired per square mile on this day. the guys in charge of protecting millions of visitors to america's monuments believe that every year apparently lost track of thousands of weapons. rifles, machine guns, handguns, you name it the interior department says that park police had some pretty sloppy recordkeeping. fortunately there's no evidence that criminals got hold of the weapons. >> all the weapons are accounted for. every weapon, every stick of

ammo, everything is accounted for. but it's not accounted for in the national park service weapons inventory computer system. it is accounted for internally. >> the national park service oversees the park police. they did not respond to that assertion but the parks service director has ordered immediate action to tighten up firearms records. in other news, oakland city workers and leaders are expected back at the bargaining table today. more than 3500 employees walked off their jobs for a one-day strike on monday. labor unions say workers have been bearing the burden of oakland's budget problems for far too long. they also say city leaders are refusing to give them important financial info that would help them with the bargaining. looks like bay area home buyers are taking a step back. the soaring prices of recent months are easing off and interest rates are on the rise. one realtor tells the "mercury news" it is a little combing of the bubble. new listings have been increasing since march but buyers aren't anxious to offer more than the asking price as

they were a few months ago. dog walkers in san francisco will have new rules after this holiday weekend. anyone walking 4 or more dogs for a fee will need a permit. no one can walk more than 8 dogs at a time and if you haven't already been in the dog walking business for three or more years, you will need 20 hours of training or apprentice work. walkers should check in with the city's animal care and control department. the time now 10 minutes after 5:00 on this friday morning. imagine this, go to college tuition free? one state's proposal to save students money. >> that wasn't supposed to happen. >> the professional fireworks show that got out of control. >> tired of the heat? don't worry, things are cooling down today. we'll talk about that coming up. >> a new accident in fremont northbound 880. we'll have the latest lane closures coming up after this break. res. watch out for space heaters.

people rushed to hospitals some with serious injuries. cbs reporter kara finnstrom joins us live from ventura county at this early hour with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning. right now police are guarding this field. you can see them hind me here. them to guard -- you can see them behind me here. they want to guard the area until the remaining fireworks are removed. you can see the fireworks and debris. 28 people were injured, four seriously but that those injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. let's show you some video of those blasts last night. what you're seeing are fireworks suddenly shooting off into a nearby crowd of onlookers. this all happened during the first few minutes of the show and we're showing you the accident from several different points. simi valley police say they believe at least one of the fireworks launching stations fell over. they also say there are no indication of foul play and

that federal officials are investigating this as an industrial accident. immediately after the explosion 50 officers staged here ran in to help those hurt. let's check the massive triage operation that took place. the victims ranged in age from 8 to 78. officials say they suffered both shrapnel and projectile type injuries. there was a crowd here of 8,000 to 10,000 people. here's how witnesses described the blast. >> there were things going into the crowd. they were shooting up in the air. smoke everywhere. panic settled in. >> in seconds the fireworks were right in our face. that's really what it was. i just think it's a miracle nobody got killed or seriously hurt. >> reporter: simi valley police say there were also some fireworks here. that show was halted so a bomb unit was brought in overnight and they rendered those devices safe. back here live again a pyrotechnics crew will be

coming out here later this morning to remove the devices and the investigation here into what went wrong continues. live in simi valley, kara finnstrom, back to you >> thank you. this is our final morning of a bart strike! let's check in with elizabeth wenger in the traffic center. >> i know. we are feeling relief here in the traffic department. i know commuters are feeling a huge sigh of relief. bart is set to resume at 3:00 this afternoon. service begins at 3 p.m. it's not available for the morning commute so a lot of people are on holiday but if you have to work today muni and caltrain are operating on a regular weekday schedule. ac transit continues to step up their transbay bus service. they have been helping out so much for this strike between the east bay and san francisco. bart is still offering their charter bus service by the way for the morning and the evening commute so it started at 5:00. they are on a first come, first served basis. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge. there is a chp-issued high wind

advisory in effect. so it's a two hands on the steering wheel morning if you are crossing the san mateo bridge. no delay out of hayward. similar story at the bay bridge. this is not a regular commute day. usually earlier in the week they were turning the metering lights on real early with this bart strike but right now good time to head into san francisco. that's traffic. for the latest on the forecast -- lawrence i finally experienced the heat wave yesterday in danville. it was hot! >> it was very hot. the sea breeze is kicking in now. we are seeing gusts to 32 miles per hour at sfo and over 20 miles an hour in concord. so that sea breeze is starting to move inland and that means we are going to cool temperatures down big time outside. highs dropping off a good 10 to 20 degrees from just yesterday. so we have some patchy coastal fog making its way inside the bay. much cooler around the bay area today and likely to see the fog increase and cooler over the weekend. so after 7 days of triple-digit

temperatures in the inland valleys, cool air is coming from the gulf of alaska bringing temperatures to around normal. even in the sacramento valley you will feel relief from the heat. 89 there, 105 in fresno. 99 in yosemite. about 83 degrees in lake tahoe. computer models showing you the fog and low clouds thickening up and sticking around especially along the coastline and shooting inside the bay and even more gray clouds for tomorrow when you weak up. numbers around the bay looking like this: 78 san jose, should be mostly sunny there this afternoon. breezy into hayward at 73 degrees, and you will see some 80s where yesterday we had some triple digits much cooler weather in the east bay, about 68 degrees in san francisco. and the next couple of days, we can take a nice deep breath of fresh air that sea breeze kicking in. looking good on the weekend, warming up monday and tuesday but no major heat wave on the horizon. it's finally broken. >> that's a refreshing looking forecast. no triple digits. thanks, lawrence. >> thanks, mr. k. some college students may

soon be able to attend for free if they promise to do one thing. pay it forward. this is a new idea in oregon. it comes amid skyrocketing tuition costs and hike in student loan rates. students attend public universities tuition and loan- free. in return, they would have a 3% deduction in post graduation paychecks for 25 years. that money pays costs for future students. it passed the oregon legislation this week. dunkin' donuts will be opening hundreds more new stores. the popular company plans to open them within the next year doubling the number of stores to 15,000. you will be getting more than glazed goodness. dunkin' donuts is also expanding its menu with new beverages and sandwiches. now, the nearest dunkin' donuts right now to the bay area is all the way down in san diego over by camp pendleton.

big news this morning, the bart strike is halted for now. service is set to resume later this afternoon. in the meantime your bridges moving well. we'll get a check of your traffic and weather together every 10 minutes right here on kpix 5. good morning. at this hour the warriors very much in the mix for free agent big man dwight howard. late information last night says that the warriors executives have found trade destinations for three of their biggest contract holders. this could free up $20 million to just throw at dwight howard. these were for bogut, jefferson and another player. howard could make his decision as early as sometime today.

>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. well, tgi friday! july 5, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm anne makovec. thanks for joining yours. frank and michelle are off. it is 5:30. breaking news this morning. that bart strike is over for now. trains start running at 3 p.m. this afternoon. bart and two unions agreed to extend their old contract for 30 more days. so that means this is only temporary. they now have until august 4 to reach an agreement. contract talks set to resume on monday. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in millbrae with the details of the deal. they worked it out late last night. cate caugiran reports. >> reporter: now they have a way to get home and that's on bart thanks to the new

agreement. the strike is effectively done for the moment. now, this is a proposal suggested by the labor secretary. he approached both sides yesterday to talk to them about the tentative agreement that will allow the trains to start running as soon as possible. >> i'm delighted to report that the parties have agreed to accept the recommendations of the mediators and myself to return to work and continue the collective bargaining process under the guidance of mediators for the next 30 days. >> reporter: both sides feel 30 days will be enough time to come closer with their negotiations while at the same time getting these trains back on track and, of course, keeping commuters happy. but make no mistake it this is not to say that at the end of this 30-day period they won't come back and say they will strike again. let's hope in the next 30-day period they will have time to

sit and talk without the pressure of the public. commuters will be happy today. >> the main sticking point is money and pay. are they anywhere closer to an agreement on that? are they even touching that issue? >> reporter: well, anne, unfortunately, when i spoke with union workers yesterday, they are still far apart when it comes to negotiations and money is a major sticking point. unfortunately, they are still working out those facts and figures with salaries. so again, as we can't stress enough they have more time to sit and talk but unfortunately, at this point, they are still too far apart in the negotiations. >> all right, thank you, cate caugiran live for us in millbrae. there are still a number of issues to be resolved in the bart contract talks. you heard cate talking about the fact that unbefore them is pay. the unions want raises for workers who agreed to a wage freeze and other concessions four years ago. bart is asking workers to pay more for their healthcare costs. and the district wants workers to start contributing to their pensions.

friday of rage. muslims are calling for a wave of protest. morsi was ousted for a military coup. the military says it wasn't a coup. if it was a coup, the united states would have to stop sending aid to egypt. nelson mandela's health is perilous. he is facing impending death. he is being kept alive with a breathing machine. this is some amateur video from 1998 when mandela visited a teenager who was dying of cancer and during that visit he did talk to the boy saying that he himself has no fear of dying. at least 6 u.s. airlines have canceled 45 flights to mexico city because of this volcano spewing ash and glowing hot rocks. people who live near the airport say they saw a light coating of volcanic ash on their homes and cars. right now federal safety officers have blocked off a 7- mile radius near the airport. they are continuing to prepare

evacuations routes and shelters. police in seattle trying to figure out what a man was doing with an arsenal of firearms near a school. 21-year-old from nevada was arrested near the university of washington campus on wednesday night. officers just happened to run his plates on the truck and then they found out the truck was stolen. the pickup had multiple stolen guns inside as well as body armor and around 10 molotov cocktails. several people were injured on a fires accident in simi valley overnight down in ventura county. watch. [ explosions ] >> that won't supposed to happen. >> police say a number of fireworks misfired. a bomb squad was sent in to deactivate the remainder of the fireworks. it happened during a professional show. several people were seriously hurt. several were taken to hospitals. the misfire happened two minutes into the show which was stopped. spectators were asked to leave.

more bay area headlines. a number of fires burned last night across the bay area. chopper 5 was over this fire in the oakland hills. it was in joaquin miller park. no word on the cause. but fireworks are blamed for at least some of last night's fires. another one in martinez, a grass fire, sent towering flames near homes along trail view circle last night. the flames were up to 60 feet. crews kept the fire to two acres. no homes were damaged. neighbors say the kids were playing with fireworks before the fire started. a water main break that soaked downtown danville is repaired this morning. but they had to close several streets last night because of this break. it happened near diablo street. several businesses were flooded. the clean-up continues this morning. we are sick of the heat wave. >> it's been triple digits day after day but today finally

that sea breeze really kicking into gear now. gusting to over 30 miles per hour at sfo over 20 in concord. low clouds and fog gathering at the coastline some of that sneaking into parts of the south bay, as well. going to see more of that in the coming days. in fact, probably going to see an increase on that toward the afternoon. just a couple of patches of clouds out over the bay bridge. mostly clear there. temperatures cooler start to the day, yesterday we had numbers running in the 60s and 70s already. so today much cooler. 50s and 60s outside. by the afternoon, it will be noticeably cooler as much as 10 to 20 degrees cooler outside. comfortable low 80s into morgan hill for today. into the east bay where we had triple digits. >> looks like we'll be in the 80s there as well and inside the bay breezy 68 degrees in san francisco. it's traffic time. elizabeth? >> thank you, lawrence. we are finally feeling relief from the heat and finally we can say bart is back up an moving as of 3:00 this afternoon. service will be restored this afternoon. for this morning commute they

rocketed booster! stock futures rose ahead of the jobless report. the jobless rate stayed at 7.6% below expectations. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> reporter: the government just released the monthly jobs report this morning. it showed that u.s. employers did add 195,000 jobs in june. that is more than what was expected. also, though, the unemployment rate remained stuck at 7.6%. economists were predicting steady growth. some thought the unemployment rate would go down. >> wall street reopens after being closed for the 4th of july holiday. positive news earlier on the jobs front pushed stocks higher dow up 56, nasdaq up 10. and roads across the country are expected to be busy over this holiday weekend. aaa predicts close to 41 million americans are traveling 50 miles or more for the 4th of july. most will get there in a car

but about three million are expected to fly. the 4th of july is typically the busiest holiday of the summer travel season. apparently everyone took off from where i live in connecticut because i have the road to myself up there, people!
